Baby Massage Oil
It's traditional to massage a baby before his bath. Massage with oil has more positive effects of neonatal infants. In many families, oils are preferred over creams and lotions for this purpose. Choosing right oil for massaging your baby is very crucial. As oil is an important aspect of massage, you need to be very careful while choosing oil for baby's sensitive skin.
Which oil should you use?
Most massage therapists recommend edible vegetable or plant extract oil like vegetable oil, organic olive oil, or grapeseed oil. But ou should take into account your infants skin type, oil availability, and likelihood of an allergy risk which can be linked to cultural or national preferences e.g. seasame oil in the UK is more likely to cause an allergic reaction than in other countries where it has been a traditionally used oil.
In general, you could conduct a “patch test” which involves applying very small amounts of different oils on different patches of skin and watching the results over the next day or so to see which ones have a reaction with the skin. Don’t use any massage oil on areas of broken skin as this has a greater chance of causing an allergic reaction.
How to use the oil?
Warm your hands by washing them with hot water before beginning. Pour a little oil into one palm before rubbing your palms together to spread the warm oil before placing your hands on your baby. Keep replenishing the oil as you go, always pouring it into your hand before applying it to your baby's body. Avoid getting the oil into your baby's eyes.
How to choose right oil for baby's massage?
- The first and foremost thing which you can do before buying oil for massaging your baby is consulting doctor. Your doctor will be able to guide you buying right oil for your baby.
- Avoid using oils which are meant for adult use or adult massage. Such oils can prove to be harmful for your baby.
- Avoid using oils with strong scents and prefer natural edible oils only. While massaging your baby the oil may enter baby's mouth. Therefore, it is extremely important to use edible oil.
- Stop using those oils immediately to which your baby's skin is allergic and consult doctor.
- Avoid mixing two three oils together for massaging your baby. Do not change the oil used for massaging frequently without consulting doctor. Continue using that oil to which your baby's skin becomes used to.
- Avoids using oils containing minerals and mineral oils.
- Most mineral-based baby massage oils/gels have an added scent, which may not be appropriate for a sensitive newborn who relies on the normal smell of their parent for bonding, feeding and instinctive sense skills.
- Some brands of baby massage oil contain a mixture of several oils. This can make it difficult when trying to isolate the cause of possible skin reactions or allergies.
- Some brands of oil have vitamin E supplement added to them. There is a risk that the Vitamin E is composed of wheat germ, which is not recommended in a baby’s diet.
- Some manufacturers produce a whole ‘baby range’ that contains essential oils. There is a concern that parents may unwittingly use them all together which could be intensely overwhelming for the infant’s sensitive physiological system.
- A scented oil, whether it is a natural or chemical scent, is best avoided as the fragrance can mask the obvious odour of rancid oil.
